Information Structure in Subordinate and Subordinate-Like Clauses
نویسنده
چکیده
While information structure has traditionally been viewed as a single partition of information within an utterance, there are opposing views that identify multiple such partitions in an utterance. The existence of alternative proposals raises questions about the notion of information structure and also its relation to discourse structure. Exploring various linguistic aspects, this paper supports the traditional view by arguing that there is no information structure partition within a subordinate clause.

Learning Preference of Dependency between Japanese Subordinate Clauses and its Evaluation in Parsing
Utsuro et al., 2000) proposed statistical method for learning dependency preference of Japanese subordinate clauses, in which scope embedding preference of subordinate clauses is exploited as a useful information source for disambiguating dependencies between subordinate clauses. Following (Utsuro et al., 2000), this paper presents detailed results of evaluating the proposed method by comparing...
متن کاملAspects of the Translation of English Subordinate Clauses into Aspects of the Translation of English Subordinate Clauses into German
While many errors in machine translated texts are due to word sense ambiguity, syntactical transfer still poses problems, too. For a particular type of syntactic structure, namely, subordinate clauses, this paper distinguishes five kinds of translation difficulties: crosslanguage differences, syntactic ambiguity, functional ambiguity, stylistic preferences, and grammatical coverage.
متن کاملAnalyzing Dependencies of Japanese Subordinate Clauses based on Statistics of Scope Embedding Preference
This paper proposes a statist ical method for learning dependency preference of Japanese subordinate clauses, in which scope embedding preference of subordinate clauses is exploited as a useful information source for disambiguating dependencies between subordinate clauses. Es t imated dependencies of subordinate clauses successfully increase the precision of an existing statistical dependency a...
متن کاملLess is more: Eliminating index terms from subordinate clauses
We perform a linguistic analysis of documents during indexing for information retrieval. By eliminating index terms that occur only in subordinate clauses, index size is reduced by approximately 30% without adversely affecting precision or recall. These results hold for two corpora: a sample of the world wide web and an electronic encyclopedia.
متن کاملLocation Specific Constraints in Matrix and Subordinate Clauses w Jane
Matrix and subordinate clauses can be different. This paper has two goals. One is to set out a general perspective on the differences between matrix and subordinate clauses, based on constraint interaction (Prince and Smolensky 1993, 2004).. The other is to solve an empirical problem with a long history: the fact that inversion of a subject and auxiliary does not occur in subordinate interrogat...
